One winter day a robin,
tired and frozen by the cold,
he was looking for a solid branch
that would allow him to rest
for a few hours under cover of
last yellowed leaves
and not yet torn
from the wind, before resuming
the flight to milder climates
but all the trees refused
to host him. The Calicanto
he took pity on him and welcomed him under his
last leaves to warm it up.
The comparison with Shakespeare is not entirely coincidental; it is a sort of homage to the great English poet and playwright.
Our region owes a dutiful thanks to the English who landed here towards the end of the 18th century and immediately understood that local grapes could produce a “DREAM” wine.
Decidedly sweet, with a hint of almond, this is an excellent dessert wine and reveals itself as a true Mediterranean essence to sip.
A glass of DREAM, enjoyed by the sea under the moonlight and fireworks, seals a meeting and transports you to a dreamlike dimension of passion and sensuality.
CURIOSITY’
The 1595 comedy, composed on the occasion of the solemn wedding celebration between members of the English aristocracy, is a true theorem on the life of men who chase and strive for love, who fall in love and desire each other without explanation, who meet through a combination of circumstances.
This is why SOGNO is a wine served at wedding banquets.
It is said that the “hero of two worlds,” Giuseppe Garibaldi, returned to Marsala on July 19, 1862. He was a guest of Count Grignani and from the balcony of his palace in Porta Nuova, he uttered the fateful words, “ROME OR DEATH.” The many Marsala residents who gathered there, organizing celebrations worthy of his fame, were particularly captivated.
When the General tasted the famous fortified wine, already marketed throughout the world thanks to the Englishman Benjamin Ingham, he particularly appreciated the Superiore Dolce, which from that day on, in his honor, would be called GARIBALDI DOLCE.
Marsala wine has a fascinating history. It is said that in 1773, the English merchant John Woodhouse was searching for soda ash for soap production in England.
A storm forced him to dock in the port of Marsala, and in a tavern he was literally won over by the taste of the local wine. His business acumen later prompted him to bring a supply of this wine to the United Kingdom, adding brandy for its preservation. The success of Marsala was such that it even encouraged Lord Horatio Nelson to purchase large quantities of the wine for the sailors of his “Home Fleet.” At Trafalgar in 1805, Nelson also won with Marsala, which from that day on became “The Victory Wine.”
In 1806, another Englishman, Benjamin Ingham, arrived in Sicily in search of raw materials for his family’s textile business. Having also recognized the great potential of Sicilian wine, he opened a winery and began successfully exporting the product to the Americas and as far away as Australia.
